EES (EU Entry/Exit System)

What is the EU Entry/Exit System (EES)?

EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is a new digital border management system that became fully operational on April 10, 2026. It replaces traditional passport stamps with a secure digital record for non-EU nationals, including UK passport holders, who can stay in the Schengen area for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without a visa.

The registration process may take additional time at passport control. We recommend arriving at the airport well in advance to ensure sufficient time for check-in.

Where does EES apply?

There are 29 EU countries that have implemented EES:

I have a UK or non-EU passport, what's next?

🤳 The first time you use the new system, you will be required to register your biometric data (fingerprints and a photo) alongside other basic information.

Children under 12 won't have to provide fingerprints and staff should be on hand to help should you have any questions.

Your EES registration will be valid for three years, with a requirement for your details to be verified on each trip during that period (biometric checks).

Will I have to pay to register?

❌ No, the EES does not charge for registration. Registration is free for UK and non-EU passport holders when traveling to the Schengen area for short stays.
